Governance

The National Institute for Health and Care Research Greater Manchester Patient Safety Research Collaboration (NIHR GM PSRC) is part of the NIHR and hosted by Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with the Universities of Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester.

There are several governance boards in place to help us meet our objectives.

Governance Board

The GM PSRC Governance Board meets three times a year to help us work effectively with stakeholders and ensure our research has the maximum impact on patient safety.

It also helps leadership to follow the overall strategy and monitors the GM PSRC within NCA’s Trust-Wide Risk Management Strategy.

Public and Community Involvement and Engagement (PCIE) Advisory Group

Our PCIE Advisory Group involves patients and members of the public, communities, and voluntary sectors.

The group takes a strategic approach, and this is followed across our themes and projects.

To find out more about our approach to PCIE, visit the public involvement page.

Strategic Advisory Group

Our GM PSRC Strategic Advisory Group provides independent feedback while assessing our research strategy, ambitions, and progress, giving feedback and advice where necessary.

The group meets every six months and is chaired by Dr Hester Wain, the Head of Patient Safety Policy, NHS England, and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I).

It gives strategic advice to the GM PSRC Governance Board and the Research Leads Group on emerging national and international priorities.

Research Leads Group

The GM PSRC Director, Professor Darren Ashcroft, chairs the collaboration’s Research Leads Group, which includes the theme leads, plus our leads for operations, communications, academic career development and PCIE.

The work of each of the themes is discussed to help aid communication across the collaboration and ensure our research strategy is delivered throughout all our areas of research.

Involvement in other Greater Manchester-based boards

Our director is a member of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) Board. This includes research and development directors from universities and NHS organisations across Greater Manchester, as well as the Academic Director for Health Innovation Manchester.

Manchester Research and Innovation NIHR Oversight Board

The main purpose of the Manchester Research and Innovation NIHR Oversight Board is to bring together all the elements of Greater Manchester’s research and innovation infrastructure, making sure we are working in the same way to deliver our agreed objectives, which are to:

  • meet the health and social care needs of our population and healthcare services;
  • promote supportive strategies across each part of the infrastructure;
  • avoid duplication of effort and maximise outputs;
  • coordinate major infrastructure bids across partners.

Our director is a member of the board, sharing expertise with colleagues from our collaboration and Greater Manchester’s NIHR infrastructure.
